The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation (NATSIEC) welcomes the tabling of the 2024 Annual Report and 2025 Implementation Plan by both the Australian Government and Coalition of Peaks at Parliament House yesterday. These reports and plans reaffirm the importance of sustained investment in early learning, school readiness, vocational training, and higher education pathways as crucial steps toward self-determination and sustainable futures for our communities.
The Prime Minister’s acknowledgment of NATSIEC’s critical role and the government’s investment in supporting community-driven solutions is a significant step forward. As the Prime Minister stated, “We work to close gaps by widening the doors of opportunity, and what achieves that with lasting power is education.” NATSIEC welcomes this partnership approach, which places the aspirations and solutions of First Nations communities at the centre of education reforms.
“Education is the pathway to self-determination and a brighter future for our mob. While progress is being made, there is more to do to ensure that First Nations students, and learners succeed in their education and training aspirations. Culturally safe programs, designed and led by our communities, are vital for achieving meaningful outcomes. We invite governments, education providers, and industry leaders to continue working with us to accelerate progress and ensure accountability in delivering reforms that truly make a difference,” said NATSIEC Co-Chairs, Professor Peter Buckskin PSM FACE and Aunty Geraldine Atkinson.
NATSIEC remains committed to advocating for First Nations education and training priorities. Through strong partnerships with the Coalition of Peaks, Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies, governments, and education providers, we are implementing the commitments under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Together, through meaningful collaboration and sustained investment, we can create an equitable education and training systems where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners thrive.
