Media Release

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation (NATSIEC) proudly congratulates Aunty Geraldine Atkinson, Co-Chair of NATSIEC, on her appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). This prestigious honour recognises her lifetime of tireless dedication to advancing self-determination across the education and training sectors for First Nations peoples.

A proud Bangerang and Wiradjuri woman, Dr Atkinson has spent over four decades transforming educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Her visionary work spans from the establishment of early childhood education services like the Lidje Child Care Centre to her enduring leadership as President of the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. since 1999.

Dr Atkinson’s efforts have significantly expanded opportunities for Koorie students to access culturally safe and empowering learning environments across Victoria. At a national level, her contributions through NATSIEC are shaping policy and structural reform, ensuring that First Nations voices are central to education systems across Australia.

Her AO appointment acknowledges not only her professional achievements but also her courage, compassion, and unrelenting advocacy for future generations. “Aunt’s leadership has shaped institutions and changed futures. This honour recognises her lifelong fight for justice, education, and our people’s right to determine our own paths,” said Sharon Davis, CEO of NATSIEC.
