The inaugural meeting of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation (NATSIEC) took place on Kaurna Country at the Lakes Hotel in Adelaide. The meeting was held over two days on the 24th and 25thJuly 2023
NATSIEC is establishing as the national peak Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education body. We will deliver community informed independent advocacy and advice to Australian governments on projects and policy of national importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Inaugural NATSIEC Chair Professor Peter Buckskin PSM FACE
NATSIEC membership comprises of Aboriginal and Torres Strait community representatives who have a long standing and continued engagement with the education sector within their respective jurisdictions. The community-controlled organisation formed through the former and longstanding Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies (IECBs) and is supported through funding provided by the Australian Government Department of Education Skills and Employment
NATSIEC will soon apply for a seat on the national Coalition of Peaks and we look forward to developing partnerships and providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community informed advice and advocacy for State and Territory Governments to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education outcomes in all jurisdictions. We will aim to ensure Australian governments demonstrate accountability on their commitments around Closing the Gap and their support for establishing their respective Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled education organisations.
